On April 4 we’ll choose the future we want
for Chicago, Wisconsin, and the nation
Let’s elect change -- On April 4, voters in Chicago and across the state of Wisconsin will be voting to choose between two starkly different futures. Here in Chicago, our Mayoral runoff pits Paul Vallas, a self-proclaimed “law and order” candidate, against Brandon Johnson, running on a truly progressive, people-first platform. In Wisconsin, the runoff is for a pivotal State Supreme Court seat that can shift to a progressive majority. That change could prove decisive in the 2024 Presidential election.
Once again, it’s not enough just to vote.
A clear choice in Chicago’s Mayoral runoff
For decades, we’ve had basically the same mayor, running the city in the same ways. Faces change but strategies are only incrementally different. Now, we have the opportunity to interrupt that cycle with Johnson’s platform of people-first priorities. This is our moment. And this is why Indivisible Chicago Alliance has endorsed Brandon Johnson.
We have the power to get the change we want—and to stop the change we fear.
Here’s how to help win the change we want:
Attend one of the Johnson campaign’s regional meetings:
North side meetup Wednesday 5-7 https://www.mobilize.us/unitedworkingfamilies/event/554272/
South Side regional meetup Thursday 6-8:30 https://www.mobilize.us/unitedworkingfamilies/event/553928/
Citywide phone banks—Tuesday and Thursday 5-8, Sunday 1-4 https://www.mobilize.us/unitedworkingfamilies/event/550026/
Canvassing and All Brandon events https://www.mobilize.us/unitedworkingfamilies/
Save the date April 1: the campaign is planning a citywide rally that will be a critical show of force in the last weekend before Election Day. Plan to be there, with friends and family. Location and timing TBD.
Vote tripling: Who do you know that is aligned with our shared values but might not feel it’s important to vote? Maximize your impact by taking responsibility for getting at least three other Johnson supporters to the polls.
Not registered to vote? No problem! Registration is open at the polls on election day so we can go, register, and vote all at once. If you’re not already registered, you’ll just need to bring two forms of ID.
Want to talk about the current topics and trends in this race? Join us for Blue Thursday March 16, 5-7pm at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, for an early evening of drinks, gossip, and schmoozing with political insiders and fellow activists. This month we’re handicapping the mayor’s race when we’ll hash it all out with the Tribune’s Greg Pratt and Shia Kapos, author of the must-read Politico Illinois Playbook. RSVP here for your free ticket.
Pass it on: facts that can help us win more votes for Brandon
Adding more police officers would actually make our city less safe. Many who might call themselves liberal are leaning toward casting their vote for Vallas because of concern about crime. Vallas promises to bring 2,000 more police officers to our streets.
Johnson challenges whether that’s even possible, given the time it takes to recruit, hire, and train officers.
But is it even a good idea? This NYU study (and this NPR report) shows this can make cities with the largest Black populations worse off.
In cities like ours, the homicide rate doesn't go down but petty arrests go up, forcing many (unnecessarily) into the criminal justice system and endangering Black lives.
Brandon Johnson’s plan to add more detectives to close cases and to invest in the root causes of crime to keep more of our neighbors out of the criminal justice system is a more effective path to safety for all of us.
CHICAGO Aldermanic runoff races
There are also runoffs in a baker’s dozen of races — the 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 21st, 24th, 30th, 36th, 43rd, 45th, 46th, and 48th wards. See the full list of aldermanic results here.
There’s so much riding on this state Supreme Court Election
Will Wisconsin start enforcing an abortion ban passed in 1849? Will voter suppression and rigged election rules favor Republicans in ways that could tip the 2024 Presidential election? These questions and many more are on the ballot in this runoff election, because they’ll be among the issues decided by the new court.
We must ensure that Judge Janet Protasiewicz is elected to Wisconsin's Supreme Court on April 4 to give progressives a 4-3 majority on the court. That will help safeguard women's reproductive freedoms and help Governor Tony Evers protect the state (and the nation!) from the extremism of Wisconsin's egregiously gerrymandered legislature. The alternative is Dan Kelly, an election denier and a rabid opponent of abortion rights, supported by Trump and the Republican money machine.
Here’s how you can help elect Judge Janet:
