You may know that Indivisible Chicago stands solidly behind the proposal known as “Bring Chicago Home,” which aims to fund the fight against homelessness by increasing the city's one-time tax on real estate transactions over $1 million. Essentially it asks the city’s most fortunate to help 68,000 of our neighbors, including some 17,000 children, who have no homes. The referendum is on the ballot in the upcoming March 19 primary.
True to form, the real estate lobby and the chamber of commerce crowd have attacked the proposal, and recently a judge sided with them and declared the referendum invalid. We are confident the decision will be reversed, but in the meantime voters are confused—which is precisely what our opponents wanted. It’s a form of voter suppression–a cynical attempt to subvert the democratic process.
The referendum is still on the ballot and Chicagoans can still VOTE YES while the case plays out in court. Please help us dispel the confusion and get the word out to voters. We’ll give you all the training and support you need and all the info it takes to let them know they can still cast their votes for a fairer future.
