Phone Banks to stop the Ohio Outrage

Republicans and their fatcat friends have reached a new low in Ohio. Having eliminated August elections less than a year ago (because August elections  are expensive and ultra-low-turnout), they had a sudden change of heart when doctors and activists started circulating petitions to protect abortion rights in the state constitution. Now an utra-low-turnout summer election is just what the Rs want! So with the help (or more likely at the direction) of their billionaire puppet masters, they have scheduled a stealth election for August 8 to change the threshold for constitutional changes from 50 to 60 percent of voters. Not only would this virtually ensure defeat of an abortion rights amendment, it would make Ohio’s horrifically gerrymandered legislature even more impervious to the will of the people. The reds are spending $20 million of their taxpayers’ money and millions more from their billionaire friends to sneak this anti-democracy measure into law in the dog days of August. They are hoping that most voters aren’t paying attention and won’t even know there’s something to vote about.

But we can have something to say about that. In our phone banks we’re talking to more and more voters who are aware of this duplicity and fired up to thwart it. We’re also talking to quite a few who were ignorant of the issue and thankful for the info we’ve been able to provide.
