Tuesday, July 12 - Ban Assault Weapons in Illinois / Support the Disclose Act / Michigan Canvassing

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Ban Assault Weapons in Illinois

Illinois can be the first state to ban assault weapons. Governor Pritzker has said that he is calling a special session of the legislature to strengthen our laws protecting abortion. The legislature could pass the assault weapons ban at the same time.

This is what you can do right now to make sure what happened in Highland Park does not happen in your community:

  • Find your state rep and your state senator’s contact info

  • Call and say this: "Hello. My name is _________. I live in [YOUR TOWN]. I ask that you please vote YES for HB5522 The Assault Weapons Ban in Special Session."

  • Then ask your friends and family in every county in the state to do the same.

  • Put your reps’ phone numbers in your speed dial and call them every day with the exact same message until they do it.

Action 2: Support the Disclose Act on Saturday

Over $1 billion of dark money was spent in the 2020 election cycle alone, according to Open Secrets. Organizations backed by anonymous donors funded and organized the Trump rally on the morning of the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Right-wing dark money is also funding attacks on our fundamental rights including reproductive freedom!

This weaponization of untraceable money has enabled corporate and special interests to push their agenda in Washington without ever being linked to their toxic advertisements or lobby efforts. Thankfully, we have a solution. The DISCLOSE Act would take crucial steps toward protecting our democracy by shining a bright light on the dark money that corrupts our system. It's time for the Senate to make the promise of democracy real by taking the imperative step of exposing secret, dark money spending through passing the DISCLOSE Act.

Write a Letter-to-the-Editor to your local newspaper and make your voice heard on the continued need for Congress and the White House to tackle secret money by passing the DISCLOSE Act. Join us for a virtual letter-writing event on Saturday, July 16 at noon.

Action 3: Michigan Canvassing on 7/17

Next door in Michigan, the fight is on right now to preserve access to abortion and save democracy in this key battleground state. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is all that stands in the way of a right-wing Republican legislature seeking to criminalize abortion and subvert free and fair elections.

On Saturday, July 17, join us for a day of door knocking and talking to voters about issues that matter to us all. For those interested in carpooling, we'll be meeting at Backlot Coffee for an 8am departure (everyone will be asked to test for covid and wear masks). Please indicate your travel preferences and canvassing experience below. (times are CST). Please sign up before Friday evening, July 15.

While some of these Daily Actions come from our own work as Indivisible Chicago Alliance, others are from our many partners working to advance the progressive agenda. We invite you to join us in supporting their work. Postings from partners do not imply Indivisible Chicago Alliance endorsement of specific policies and positions.
