Action 1: How to Help Migrants in Chicago
Texas governor Greg Abbott has cruelly been bussing thousands of asylum seekers to Chicago with no warning, no resources, and no support system. Since August of 2022, more than 18,000 migrants have arrived in Chicago. Chicago has stepped up to shelter as many migrants as possible, but these vulnerable families need our help. According to Block Club Chicago, nearly 11,000 are being housed in temporary city-run shelters, while about 3,000 are sleeping in police stations and city airports.
As winter approaches and temperatures have already started to drop, there are many ways for Chicagoans to help this at-risk community. Block Club Chicago has compiled a list of places to donate to this holiday season to help migrants in Chicago. If you have the means, please consider supporting one of these organizations through monetary or item donations.
Action 2: Support the IL Assault Weapons Ban
The Illinois State Police (ISP) will be holding three public hearings to collect comments on the implementation and enforcement of the Protect Illinois Communities Act.
As a reminder, the Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA) bans the manufacturing and sale of assault weapons in Illinois and requires owners of existing semi automatic rifles to register their weapons by January 1, 2024.
PICA serves as a vital shield safeguarding our most vulnerable members: our children, families, and communities, from the specter of gun violence. For us to finish the job on this life-saving action, we need to make our voices heard—and make sure the gun industry and their lobby doesn't drown us out.
We fought hard to set the stage for this kind of action—now, let's make sure it happens. We strongly urge you to submit your comment by November 20th saying that you support the Protect Illinois Communities Act.
