Action 2: Witness Slip for Affordable Insulin due TOMORROW
No one should have to go without access to lifesaving medication like insulin, which can cost upwards of $300 for a week's supply. Lack of access to affordable insulin is causing over one million Americans to risk their health by rationing insulin -- skipping doses or taking smaller doses to make their insulin stretch.
The Access to Affordable Insulin Act (HB 2189/SB 1559) will help Illinoisans by:
1) Lowering the Insulin Co-Pay Cap: Reducing the $100 co-pay cap to $35 for state-regulated health plans to align with the Medicare Part D Senior Savings Model and other state and federal efforts to make insulin more affordable.
2) Creating an Emergency Insulin Program: Once a year, eligible Illinoisans would be able to obtain a 30-day supply of insulin for $35. To qualify, the individual would need to have less than a seven-day supply of insulin available, currently be required to pay more than $35 out of pocket each month for insulin, and must be a resident of Illinois.
The Access to Affordable Insulin Act is heading the Senate Insurance Committee. Please join us in filing witness slips as proponents of SB 1559 before 5:30 p.m. TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 21.
