Protest TODAY for Police Accountability
An arbitrator ruled that Chicago Police Department officers facing discipline, regardless of the severity, should have the option to have their cases heard in arbitration, behind closed doors, instead of being brought before the Police Board in public meetings. Previously, any crime or misconduct that would warrant a suspension of greater than 1 year was required to go before the Police Board, a public body subject to the Open Meetings Act. This ruling, if carried out, would bring greater secrecy and less accountability to CPD's disciplinary process, as arbitrators have a financial incentive to make decisions favorable to the FOP, since the arbitrators themselves have to be selected by both the FOP and the City's Law Department. This arbitrator's decision needs to be ratified by the City Council, however, before it goes into effect.
We are demanding that
1) Alderpeople vote against the ratification of this measure when it comes before the City Council for a vote
2) the FOP cease attempts to circumvent or subvert the system of democratic police accountability that the people fought to create
