Friday, June 14 - Blue Thursday Political Happy Hour 6/20 / Exclusive Screening of Bad River

Actions You Can Take

Action 1: Blue Thursday Political Happy Hour 6/20

Two campaign consultants walk into a bar. . . and the result is Blue Thursday for June 20, a freewheeling survey of the political scene just a few months before what we hope won’t be the last presidential election in US history.

Our guests will be two prominent Democratic campaign strategists: Don Rose, "a legend in Chicago politics" (Sun-Times), whose career goes all the way back to the Democratic convention of 1968 and up through Jane Byrne and Harold Washington to the present day; and Pete Giancreco, a veteran consultant who advised Barack Obama, among many others, and was named by Ballotpedia as one of the "top influencers" in Illinois.

Don was at the very first meeting of Blue Beginning at the Hideout back in 2017. Pete wowed our crowd the last time he joined us in November of 2023. This is sure to be a smart and informative evening. Do join us!

Blue Thursday, if you didn't know, is a monthly political happy hour where we mix it up with pols, pundits, and our fellow progressives. Bar opens at 5:30, program goes 6-7, but come early and stay late to schmooze and mingle. Free and open to all, but please RSVP here.

Action 2: Exclusive Screening of Bad River 6/20

For years, the National Wildlife Federation has been working with the Bad River Band of the lake Superior Chippewa in Wisconsin as part of the campaign to Shut Down Line 5. On June 20 at the Chicago Botanic Gardens, NWF is hosting a free screening of the documentary Bad River, that tells the story of the Band’s history of resistance including current their fight against the Enbridge and Line 5.

Bad River is a powerful documentary that chronicles the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band’s ongoing fight for sovereignty, which unfolds in a groundbreaking way through a series of shocking revelations, devastating losses, and a powerful legacy of defiance and resilience. The film sweeps through history and culminates in the present with a David and Goliath battle over a 70-year-old oil pipeline that is one spring flood away from a rupture, which would devastate Lake Superior, the largest freshwater resource in America. As Eldred Corbine, a Bad River Tribal Elder declares in the film… “we gotta protect it… die for it, if we have to.”

See the film that critics are calling “an exceptional testament to Native resilience,” and “an important story, another call to think about not only the ancestors who made this land but also how we’re leaving it for future generations.” The film is narrated by Quannah ChasingHorse and Academy-Award nominee, Edward Norton.

When: June 20, 5:30pm

Where: Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Rd., Glencoe, IL 60022
