Action 1: Tell Senators to Stay in Session
Democrats beat the odds and outperformed expectations in a historic way during the midterms. Democrats successfully beat back the expected ‘red wave’ of MAGA extremism. While Republicans paid a price for their radical agenda, they did narrowly take control of the House of Representatives, which means Democrats must use every moment of the trifecta that is left to deliver as much of the Democratic agenda as possible! That means they have from now until January 3rd, 2023 (Swearing In Day) to deliver on a long list of priorities.
We need Democrats to stay in session for the remainder of this calendar year so we can minimize the harm Republicans can do by:
Accomplishing as much legislative clean-up as possible. This means passing wildly popular bills like the Marriage Equality Act, and reforms to the Electoral Count Act that are ready to pass on the floor, but we know Republicans would never bring up for a vote.
Preventing hostage taking in the 118th Congress. This means lifting the debt ceiling so Republicans don’t have a hostage to take next year–threatening Social Security, Medicare and the entire global economy!

Action 2: Pretrial Fairness Act Teach-in TODAY
We’re delighted to announce that progressives like you have successfully protected the Pretrial Fairness Act from being rolled back or repealed during veto session! This achievement represents years of tireless work from hundreds of advocates for justice all over the state, and we should all be proud of the part we played in making Illinois the nation’s leader in defending the presumption of innocence.
In the new year, focus will shift from protecting the Pretrial Fairness Act to making sure it gets implemented properly. On January 1, 2023, Illinois will become the first state in the nation to completely eliminate the jailing of people who are awaiting trial simply because they’re poor—a practice that has devastated Black, Brown, and poor communities across our state for decades. After two years of intense organizing, our state now leads the nation in defending the presumption of innocence and reforming a justice system that has always disadvantaged Black, brown, and poor communities.
