Action You Can Take Today

Action 1: NEW Witness Slips for Assault Weapons Ban

State Representative Bob Morgan introduced the Protect Illinois Communities Act (HB5855) last week, which includes several key measures to advance gun safety in Illinois, including a ban on assault weapons, increasing the FOID eligibility age to 21, and strengthening the Firearms Restraining Order to keep guns away from dangerous people

Specifically, this bill:

  • Makes it unlawful to manufacture, deliver, sell, or purchase or cause to be manufactured, delivered, sold, or purchased or cause to be possessed by another, an assault weapon, assault weapon attachment, .50 caliber rifle, or .50 caliber cartridge.

  • Makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly possess an assault weapon, .50 caliber rifle, or .50 caliber cartridge 300 days after the effective date of the amendatory Act, except possession of weapons registered with the Illinois State Police in the time provided.

  • Provides exemptions and penalties.

  • Prohibits the manufacture, delivery, sale, purchase, or possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Action 2: Tell Senators to Defend Farm Workers

This week, a delegation of farm workers representing the 2.4 million farm workers across America is in Washington D.C. to push Congress to include legal status for farm workers in year-end must-pass bills, sharing their stories directly with Members of Congress. We need you to add your voice to theirs. This week is critical to get this vital legislation across the finish line.

Help amplify the voices of the millions of farm workers who couldn’t travel to D.C. this week by calling your Senators today.

  • Senator Duckworth | DC: 202-224-2854 | Chicago 312-886-3506 | Email Sen. Duckworth or call another office

  • Senator Durbin | DC: 202-224-2152 | Chicago 312-353-4952 | Email Sen. Durbin or call another office

Sample script: Hello, my name is ________, and I am a constituent from ________. I am calling to urge Senator ______ to pass farm worker legalization by the end of this year. Farm workers put food on all our tables and deserve the chance to live and work without fear. It’s urgent that the Senator take action now to ensure farm workers can obtain legal status before the end of the year. Thank you.
