Actions You Can Take Today
Action 1: Submit a public comment against Chicago’s gang database by December 7
Action 2: Tell Your Legislator to See the Pretrial Fairness Act Through to Implementation
Action 1: Get Rid of the Gang Database
The Chicago Police Department has published yet another draft of its new ‘Criminal Enterprise Information System’ otherwise known as the Chicago Gang Database, for public comment. Community members have until Wednesday, December 7 to make public comments rejecting this and any other gang database.
90 gang arrest cards (GAC) have dates prior to 1901, making those individuals 117 years old. 80 GACs are listed as having ages of 0.
95% of those in the Gang Database are Black and brown, with little-to-no substantial proof showing that people categorized as gang-members are in fact gang-affiliated.
Simply put, the data is bad and it has a disparate impact on communities of color. Read more about the gang database.
Submit a public comment against the database before Wednesday, December 7.

Action 2: Act Now for Pretrial Fairness
In just a few short weeks, Illinois will implement the Pretrial Fairness Act, a law that will end money bond and ensure that no one is jailed while awaiting trial simply because they can’t afford to purchase their freedom. The Pretrial Fairness Act will improve community safety and make our pretrial system more fair, but some are attacking legislators who voted for the Pretrial Fairness Act and trying to intimidate them into rolling it back or repealing it before it goes into full effect!
Our voices together are most powerful when legislators hear directly from constituents. Use this simple tool to call your legislators and let them know you want them to stand strong against efforts to roll back or repeal the Pretrial Fairness Act! While calls might feel intimidating, the staff of these legislators will listen to your voice as a constituent, and it's the most valuable type of legislator contact you can do right now.
Together, we can protect this historic policy change that will expand pretrial freedom and justice throughout Illinois!
