Tuesday, August 23 - Meet Two Illinois Supreme Court Candidates 8/30 / Protect Our Courts Postcards

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: Meet Two Illinois Supreme Court Candidates on 8/30

Reproductive freedom in Illinois has not been at such great risk since the pre-Roe days, and if we lose just one of the Illinois Supreme Court seats we will lose our pro-choice majority. Given this bleak reality, we’re co-hosting Jane’s Army upcoming event to help ensure that pro-choice voters turn out this election.

Tune in to hear from two candidates for the IL Supreme Court - Judge Mary Kay O’Brien & Judge Elizabeth Rochford - and organizers from Jane’s Army to learn more about what the stakes are this November, why we need to elect these two progressive candidates, and how you can plug into the work!

Action 2: Protect Our Courts Postcards

The Illinois Supreme Court is the court of last resort in Illinois. Conservatives already control 3 of the 7 seats on the court.

This November there will be two newly-redistricted seats up for election:
the 2nd Judicial District (DeKalb, Lake, Kane, Kendall and McHenry Counties) and the 3rd Judicial District (Bureau, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, LaSalle and Will Counties).

If right-wing forces take over the Illinois Supreme Court and align with the politicized majority at the U.S. Supreme Court, many hard-won freedoms will be in jeopardy. We have already seen the federal court undermine fundamental individual rights, voting rights, equal access to justice and the democracy of our nation. With the United States Supreme Court controlled by far-right conservatives, the Illinois Supreme Court will become our last line of defense to protect hard-fought rights.

Sign up to write postcards to voters about the Supreme Court elections! Volunteers will be provided with postcards, voter lists, and a short template of what to write. Volunteers and groups are asked to purchase postage (postcard stamps will soon be $.44).

While some of these Daily Actions come from our own work as Indivisible Chicago Alliance, others are from our many partners working to advance the progressive agenda. We invite you to join us in supporting their work. Postings from partners do not imply Indivisible Chicago Alliance endorsement of specific policies and positions.
