Tuesday, December 12 - Stop FOP Attempts to Undermine Police Accountability / Equal Rights Amendment

Action You Can Take Today

Action 1: Stop FOP from Undermining Police Accountability

An arbitrator recently released a decision that Chicago Police officers facing discipline, regardless of the severity, should have the option to have that discipline heard in arbitration behind closed doors instead of going before the public Police Board. This is an attack by the Fraternal Order of Police on the system of accountability that the people have fought to create in ECPS. Luckilly, in order for this arbitrator's decision to go into effect, the City Council has to ratify the decision.

Some alders haven't yet stated whether they will stand with us in upholding police accountability, so we're calling on supporters to demand that those alders say NO to arbitration. Get the script and phone numbers here.

In addition to making phone calls, the CAARPR has called a rally at City Hall (121 N Lasalle) on Wednesday, December 13 at 9 AM to let the city council know we will not allow for the fight against racist policing to be dragged back into the shadows.

Action 2: Tell Biden to Publish the Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal rights Amendment (ERA) was originally introduced in Congress on December 10, 1923, passed overwhelming by Congress in 1972, and ratified and became the 28th Amendment on December 27, 2020. However, the ERA has yet to be included in the Constitution.

Shattering Glass and its affiliate, the National ERA Publication Task Force, recently led 84 organizations and professional associations from across the country in calling on President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to publish the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

This letter is the most diverse push yet to pressure the President to ensure the Archivist performs her ministerial duty to print a revised Constitution that includes the ERA. The signatories include gender and racial justice organizations, democracy and voting focused organizations, medical and professional associations, faith leaders, and more from across the country. This diversity reflects the urgent need for the ERA. The ERA is the most powerful tool available to guarantee equality for all, stop the ever-increasing attacks on the rights of women, girls and LGBTQIA+ people, protect access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare, and preserve our democracy and credibility on the world stage.

You, too can sign onto the letter urging President Biden to publish the ERA. Sign here today to add your voice!
