Actions You Can Take

Action 1: Phone Bank for Bring Chicago Home

Join Indivisible Chicago virtually to make phone calls for Bring Chicago Home!

With over 68,000 people homeless in Chicago, the Bring Chicago Home coalition aims to create a dedicated revenue stream for the city to address homelessness by funding more permanent housing and supportive services. The proposal would be funded by changing the Real Estate Transfer Tax (RETT), a one-time tax on properties when they are sold, to a progressive structure. So properties sold for under a $1 million--roughly 96% of real estate sales in Chicago--would receive a tax cut, while properties sold for over $1 million would see a slight increase to the transfer tax. In order to enact this policy, Chicago voters need to VOTE YES on the referendum that will be on the March 19 primary ballot.

Action 2: 2024 Canvass Launch to Bring Chicago Home

Homelessness is a critical issue in Chicago. With around 68,000 individuals affected by homelessness in our city, the Bring Chicago Home proposal is a game-changer. The plan restructures the Real Estate Transfer Tax to fund permanent housing and services for our unhoused neighbors by taxing the wealthy to help pay for shelters. It's supported by progressive alders, but faces real and current opposition from real estate special interests as we approach the March 2024 ballot. With your involvement, we can counter conservative challenges and ensure Bring Chicago Home wins as a ballot initiative in March, so that we can vote to enact it in November.

On January 20, from 10am to 2pm at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Logan Square, The People’s Lobby will begin a season of events and actions leading up to the March 19th primary with a canvass launch! This will be a critical opportunity for us to gather, strategize, and mobilize our efforts. We’ll get grounded in this race and what it will take to win Bring Chicago Home before heading out for a canvass shift in the neighborhood. We’ll provide all the training you need. We need your voice and your presence in the community to get people excited about this opportunity to end Chicago’s housing crisis! RSVP for the event here.
