Witness Slip Roundup
Illinois’ unique system of witness slips makes it easy for citizens to weigh in on important bills quickly using an online form. Before a bill is heard in the Illinois General Assembly, the chairperson will read who has submitted witness slips and whether they support or oppose the bill. This helps inform legislators as to where Illinoisans and organizations stand before voting. Witness slips are a great and relatively quick way to make your voice heard in state government.
Here are a few important bills collecting witness slips for hearings this week. See a description of the bills from She Vote IL.
DUE TODAY - Prescription drugs SB 2893 (Proponent). Carried by Rep. Maurice West and Sen. Karina Villa, the bill would create the Wholesale Prescription Drug Importation Program and provide additional opportunities for Illinoisans to access their prescriptions at more affordable costs.
DUE TODAY - HB2093 - Sexual Assault by Deception (Proponent). Introduced by Representative Katie Stuart, provides that an individual commits sexual assault by deception when they engage in sexual penetration, and the victim consents under the mistaken belief that the perpetrator is someone familiar to them other than the accused, due to the accused's intentional pretense or concealment with the aim of inducing this belief.
Due Wednesday - HB4264, Menstrual Product - Donations (Proponent). Introduced by State Representative Barbara Hernandez, creates the Good Samaritan Menstrual Products Act which shields donors, manufacturers, distributors, and nonprofits from liability for health issues arising from donated menstrual products.
Due Wednesday - HB4474, School Code - IEP - Voter Registration (Proponent). Introduced by State Representative Nabeela Syed, amends the Children with Disabilities Article of the School Code to require consideration of voter registration as a goal in the individualized education program (IEP) for students 17 or older. Details on voter registration inclusion and implementation must be included in the IEP.
