Action 1: TODAY - Illinois Standing With Queer & Trans Communities
These past few months have been extremely difficult for the LGBTQ+ community across the country. Florida enacted the “don’t say gay” bill and the Texas governor demanded that parents and medical providers of trans youth be investigated for child abuse. While these have been the cases that have received the most attention, there has been a wave of more than 240 anti-queer and anti-trans bills filed across the country as well as anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, discrimination, and attacks.
In light of this snowball of issues targeting our LGBTQ+ community, our organizations partnered for a rally to support trans and queer communities on March 28 at Federal Plaza in Chicago. Unfortunately, the rally was hijacked by aggressive disruptors. For the safety of our community, we had to cancel the action to protect.
Our community refuses to be silenced or intimidated so we will reclaim our space and move forward with our action and press conference. Please join us TODAY, Wednesday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Chicago Federal Plaza and stand against bigotry and hate in Illinois.
Action 2: Panel: Addressing Racial Trauma on Saturday
Racial trauma is pervasive, structural, and interpersonal, and carries lifelong consequences for its victims and their families throughout their lives. From being subjected to frequent micro-aggressions, biases, disenfranchisement, silencing, whitewashing, to hate incidents, violence, systemic injustice, and abandonment by agencies and professionals alike, racial trauma is a hidden epidemic waiting for a national discussion even as it continues destroying the lives of its sufferers — while still as yet remaining out of the discussion in many mental health circles and professional preparation programs.
Join trauma therapist Janell McGruder of McGruder Wellness Initiatives; Patrick Peacock, founder of "The Peacock Foundation"; and Illinois Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth for this important discussion on addressing the pervasive mental health challenges of trying to prevent, identify, and treat the lifelong, ongoing negative impact of racial trauma — the mental health and wellness of Black folx and other People of Color, what actions allies must take on to begin halting the ongoing spread, and highlight some resources available to begin one's healing journey.
Join the Panel: Addressing Racial Trauma in Black & Other Communities of Color on Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (virtual event)
