Action 1: Cancel Student Loan Debt
In just a few weeks, President Biden could make a decision that would help 45 million people and pour billions of dollars into the economy.
Last Monday, at a meeting with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, President Biden confirmed that he was looking at options to cancel some amount of student loan debt. On Thursday, Biden said that a final decision will be made in the coming weeks.
This is a big moment. If we can support President Biden, and push him to go even further, we could fundamentally change the reality of overwhelming debt in this country for 45 million borrowers. There’s been a lot of research on loan cancellation, and the studies are clear: Universal student debt cancellation helps address systemic inequality, builds the middle class (particularly the Black middle class), creates jobs, increases home-buying rates, and does so much more.
We have a small window of opportunity to uplift Biden for following through on a major campaign promise. It’s time for us to encourage him to take bold action at a time when it is sorely needed.
