Action 1: Defend the Welcoming City Ordinance in Chicago
Since 2017, Illinois residents have been protected by the Illinois TRUST Act and the Chicago Welcoming Ordinance. Under these laws, state and local law enforcement is restricted in the ways that they can cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Ald. Raymond Lopez has proposed an ordinance (O2023-000422) that would weaken the Welcoming City Ordinance and would violate the Illinois TRUST Act. It is expected to be voted on this Wednesday, January 15.
Here are the actions you can take:
NOW: Please call your alderperson and ask them to vote NO on Wednesday on this ordinance. A list of all Alders and their contact information may be found on this link. If you are not in Chicago, please watch for similar ordinances where you live, and please forward onto any Chicagoans you know.
Monday, January 13th: Please join us, immigrant rights organizations, and many others for a press conference this Monday Jan 13 at 11am at City Hall, 121 N Lasalle, to demand NO votes for this ordinance that would put all of our communities at risk. We need everyone at this moment. Sign up here.
Wednesday, January 15th: Please also join us on Wednesday Jan 15 at 10am at City Council, 121 N Lasalle, when the ordinance will be voted on. Sign up here.

While some of these Daily Actions come from our own work as Indivisible Chicago Alliance, others are from our many partners working to advance the progressive agenda. We invite you to join us in supporting their work. Postings from partners do not imply Indivisible Chicago Alliance endorsement of specific policies and positions.
