Monday, January 13 - Protect Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance/ Indivisible Community Gatherings

Actions You Can Take

Action 1: Protect Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance

Right before Trump takes office, a couple of Alders want to weaken Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, allowing police to work with ICE in some instances. Stand with us TODAY at City Hall to say NO! Indivisible Chicago and immigrant rights organizations will hold a news conference at 11:30 today to demand NO votes for this ordinance that would require police to engage in warrantless conduct by collaborating with immigration federal officials, without legal warrants, pursuing people arrested for or convicted of certain offenses. This ordinance would harm many communities across the City directly and indirectly.

The ordinance proposed by Ald. Raymond Lopez (O2023-000422) is expected to be voted on this Wednesday, January 15.

  • Sign up here to join us today at City Hall, 121 N Lasalle, at 11:30. We need everyone to stand up and protect immigrants at this moment.

  • You can also join us Wednesday, January 15th, when a vote on this issue is expected at 10am at City Council, 121 N Lasalle. Sign up here.

  • Call your alderperson to ask them to vote NO on this ordinance. A list of all Alders and their contact information may be found on this link.

Action 2: Indivisible Chicago Community Gatherings

We have one week left before Trump takes his oath of office. Let’s use these days to organize instead of agonize. Join Indivisible Chicago and your neighbors at Community Gatherings this week to deepen our bonds for the challenges ahead and plan for how to respond. This is part of our ongoing work to build resilient communities that can strategize for what’s next because there's so much worth fighting for. If you haven’t joined one of our community gatherings yet, this is your chance!

While some of these Daily Actions come from our own work as Indivisible Chicago Alliance, others are from our many partners working to advance the progressive agenda. We invite you to join us in supporting their work. Postings from partners do not imply Indivisible Chicago Alliance endorsement of specific policies and positions.
