ICA Action & Partner Action: Follow Up Actions from the Trans Healthcare Protest at Lurie Children’s Hospital
Last Saturday, we gathered to Fight for Trans Healthcare near the Lurie Children’s Hospital to protest the hospital administration’s decision to comply with the Trump administration’s Executive Order banning gender-affirming care for people under 19. We were loud at the protest, but we can’t stop now. We need to make it clear that it’s UNACCEPTABLE to sacrifice the life saving care of trans youth. We ask that you contact Lurie Children’s Hospital to demand that they resume providing surgical care for trans youth under 19, in addition to hormone therapy and mental health care services.
In addition, we are contacting Attorney General Kwame Raoul to thank him for standing with 13 other state Attorneys General and reaffirming their commitment to protecting access to gender-affirming care in the face of the Trump administration’s executive order. The coalition’s statement. We are now asking the AG to enforce IL state law banning discrimination based on gender identity and demanding that he take action against health care institutions violating that law, such as Lurie Children’s Hospital, and any other facility that changes their care based on the illegal executive order.

Partner Action: Oppose the SAVE Act
The House and Senate introduced the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require citizenship documentation to register to vote even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering.
It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. The bill’s requirement of a document to prove American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections is unnecessary and seeks to divide us. It also creates another barrier to voting.
Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. The SAVE Act would create one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents. Compared to white US citizens, citizens of color are three times more likely to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship or face difficulties accessing them. For example, while approximately half of all American adults possess a passport, two-thirds of Black Americans do not.
