Congressional Republicans are advancing a budget reconciliation bill that would increase funding for ICE and Customs and Border Protection without any meaningful reforms or accountability. This partisan approach bypasses typical legislative thresholds and could also trigger cuts to essential programs like healthcare in order to offset new spending.
Advocates warn that expanding funding for these agencies without oversight will further enable harmful enforcement practices, while diverting resources away from critical social services. At a time when many communities are already facing rising costs and reduced access to care, Congress should be focused on protecting essential programs — not expanding unchecked funding for ICE and CBP.
