ICA and Partner Action: Canvass and Phone Bank for WI Election

Help progressives win the April 7 Wisconsin Supreme Court race! A win by Democrat-endorsed candidate Chris Taylor will increase the majority of pro-democracy judges on the court, helping to protect fair legislative maps, abortion rights and democracy in this critical swing state.

ICA Partner Action: The Human Cost of U.S. Immigration Policy 4/16

The Indivisible Lincoln Square Immigration Committee will host a forum on family separation and detention on Thursday, April 16th from 5:30-7:30PM at Sulzer Regional Library. Speakers will include the Chicago City Council’s Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, and Paral & Associates—who will discuss local immigrant demographics.

ICE resumed the cruel practice of family detention as part of the administration’s broad attacks on immigrant communities, including militarized enforcement, mass deportations, and increased surveillance. ICE detains children—including infants and toddlers—alongside their parents, where families wait to see if ICE will remove them from the U.S. or if they will be granted protection and be allowed to remain in the country. In addition, 11,000 children are now separated from their families due to immigration actions.

Community Action: Canvass and Phone Bank for Pretrial Fairness

In 2023, Illinois became the first state in the country to end money bond and expand access to the presumption of innocence. With more people returning to the community, the Pretrial Success pilot program was created to help communities expand access to vital services such as mental health and substance use disorder support, transportation, and child care for people awaiting trial. The Pretrial Success pilot program focuses on increasing access to these resources in five regions with the program expanding soon after.

This essential investment in community safety could be in jeopardy due to budget cuts. Jurisdictions across the country are being forced to make cuts to essential services because of funding that has been withheld by the Trump administration. The Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice is hosting multiple outreach events to ensure that legislators allocate $15 million to communities most affected by pretrial jailing.

Canvassing Events: We will be in person talking to community members about pretrial jailing and how to increase community resources through the Pretrial Success Act. Training will be provided beforehand so people feel confident in talking with others.

Friendbanking Virtual Events: People are more likely to take action when asked by someone they know. That is why we'll be coming together to map our personal network and getting our friends and family to take action and inform their communities.

Textbanking Virtual Events: We will be sending text messages to people statewide on how to take action and send letters to legislators in support of Pretrial Success. We will go over the text script and replies in real time.
