Partner Action: Safer, Cleaner Energy for Chicago

In 2026, the gas utility company Peoples Gas filed a rate hike request with the Illinois Commerce Commission which would increase the average Chicago home heating bills by $10 to $11 per month if the commission approves the increase in full.

This filing comes less than a year after regulators ordered Peoples Gas to overhaul its controversial pipe retirement program, which has been chronically over budget and behind schedule. Despite spending billions of dollars on pipe replacement, multiple outside expert reviews have found the program was not improving safety in proportion to the utility’s spending. If we allow this program to continue unchecked, the city will be on the hook for fossil fuel infrastructure into the next century.

👉 Here's how you can help fight this $202 million dollar rate hike:

👉 Then, find your alderperson and call them about the rate increase

Script for alderpeople who have already spoken against the rate increase: La Spata (1), Sigcho-Lopez (25), Conway (34), Vasquez (40), Rodriguez-Sanchez (43), Martin (47), Manaa-Hoppenworth (48), Hadden (49)

This is [Full Name] and I live at [ADDRESS]. I’m calling to thank Alder ______ for being a leader in holding Peoples Gas accountable, and to ask them to keep the pressure on for more transparency and reform from Peoples Gas as it doubles down on its failed pipe replacement strategy with its latest rate hike proposal of $202 million.

I care about this issue because (choose one):

  • My gas bill has increased from x to x in the last couple of years.

  • I am concerned about climate change and don’t want Chicago to invest in more fossil fuel infrastructure.

  • Peoples Gas should spend money more effectively through advanced repairs and electrification.

  • Anything else!

That’s why I appreciate Alder ____  for their work in the past, and encourage them to oppose the latest rate hike proposal and push Peoples Gas to reform its pipe replacement strategy.

Script for all other alderpeople:
