Community Action: Protect the Right to Vote and Fair Representation

On April 29th, the Supreme Court handed down a 6-3 ruling, made along ideological lines, that further diminished the Voting Rights Act (VRA). While the Supreme Court has gradually struck down parts of the VRA over the last couple decades, the ruling in Louisiana v. Callais effectively invalidates Section 2 which sought to protect the voting rights of people of color and block discriminatory electoral rules.

In her dissent, Justice Elena Kagan wrote, “Under the Court’s new view of Section 2, a State can, without legal consequence, systematically dilute minority citizens’ voting power,” and many southern states have already begun to do just that, including Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina. The Louisiana Governor went so far as to suspend the current primary election even though voting had already begun.

The Callais ruling, and a ruling by the Virginia Supreme Court that struck down a voter-approved new congressional map, have both highlighted the need for strong voting rights legislation and Supreme Court reform.

Community Action: Support the WI Primary Election

Find out how your can support the August 11th Partisan Primary Election.

👉 Wisconsin August Primary Poll Observer Recruitment Phone Banks

Help protect the vote in Wisconsin by recruiting poll observers for our August primary election! Poll observers are our eyes and ears at polling locations, and we need your help to recruit them so that voters can safely and easily cast their ballots this spring.

👉 Sign up to be a WisDems Poll Observer

Poll observers are the eyes and ears for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s Voter Protection Team inside polling locations across the state, and are the last line of defense against instances of voter suppression. You will be assigned to a polling place, and will be the first to report any issues that arise (like long lines, machine problems, or voters being turned away unnecessarily), and will act as a resource for voters who may need assistance. You don't need to be a Wisconsin resident to participate.

One last thing...

👉 Sign up to learn more about the hotline and ballot cure program with the WisDems Voter Protection Program.
