Tuesday, August 12 - Stand with Texas Rally 8/16 / Denounce Trump's Takeover of D.C. and Demand Statehood / Building Partnerships and Coalitions 8/18
ICA Action: Stand With Texas 8/16
The outrageous Texas power grab by Donald Trump and his fellow thugs is a political emergency with national implications. Through their brazen attempt to gerrymander 5 Congressional seats into the Republican column, they are undermining fair elections, silencing voters of color, and attacking our country's democratic foundations.
We need action everywhere because this will not stop in Texas. Illinois was one of the first states to stand up, showing that we are going to defend the vote, protect our rights, and oppose this anti-democratic power grab.
Come join us in downtown Chicago when we raise our voices with defenders of Democracy in cities across the nation on August 16 at 11:00 a.m. Location TBD.
Partner Action: Denounce Trump's Takeover of D.C. and Demand Statehood
Residents of Washington, D.C. pay federal taxes but lack Senators or a voting Representative, leaving their voices unheard. Local laws supported by voters can be overruled by Congress without the protections of statehood. Despite having a larger population than Vermont and Wyoming, D.C. has less influence in government. In 2016, 86% of residents voted for statehood to challenge this unfair situation.
Now, the Trump administration is exploiting emergency powers to take control of D.C. again. Claiming the city is “overrun by violent gangs,” Trump invoked section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, despite crime rates being at a 30-year low.
These actions are baseless and represent another abuse of power. Lawmakers should prioritize granting D.C. statehood and ensuring its residents receive fair treatment. Support H.R. 51 and S. 51 to make D.C. a state.
👉 Our IL Senators already cosponsor this bill. Check if your House rep is a co-sponsor, then call them to thank them or ask. them to sponsor.
Script: Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [REP NAME] to support H.R. 51 to make the District of Columbia the 51st state in the union. The Trump administration’s unjustified move to federalize the D.C. police and deploy the National Guard clearly demonstrates that the District of Columbia deserves self-determination and full voting representation in Congress.
