Partner Action: Condemn Trump’s Firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner

On August 1st, Trump ordered his administration to fire Erika McEntarfer, the BLS Commissioner, following the release of a weak jobs report. The data showed only 73,000 new jobs in July, downward revisions for May and June, and an unemployment rate increase to 4.2%. These figures mark the steepest slowdown since the pandemic.

Trump accused McEntarfer of “rigging” the data to make him look bad and announced her immediate replacement. However, there is no evidence of manipulation; even his top economic advisor accepted the numbers on CNN.

Economists say inflation, government cuts, and Trump’s tariff changes have caused economic uncertainty. The administration’s deportation policies are also reducing immigrant labor.

Trump’s politically motivated firing threatens the credibility of BLS data, which is vital globally.

I ask that [REP/SEN] support oversight hearings, protect the credibility of the BLS economic data, and ensure the Trump administration does not cook the books for political gain.

Partner Action: What’s the Plan? Discussion with Indivisible’s Co-Founders 8/14

The onslaught of news, the chaos coming out of the White House – it’s all meant to overwhelm us. It’s a deliberate strategy to sow confusion and make us believe we are powerless to fight back.

The antidote: Coming together in community to process what’s happening, to sift through what’s important and what’s just noise, and coalesce around strategies for fighting back.

Join Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin each week, as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.
