Wednesday, April 16 - Demand Progressive Revenue Solutions in Illinois / Protect Worker Safety by Reversing NIOSH Cuts / ACLU People Power Action Call

Partner Action: Demand Progressive Revenue Solutions in Illinois

Yesterday, as part of the Whose Side Are You On? Tax Day Rally & March held in Chicago, organized by The People's Lobby, rallygoers heard from members of the Illinois Revenue Alliance—a coalition of community groups, labor unions, and service orgs fighting for progressive revenue solutions in Illinois.

Did you know our state has one of the most regressive tax systems in the Midwest? The lowest-income families pay more than double the tax rate (as a share of income) than the top 1%. It's time to flip the script.

Enter HJR 18 & SJR 22, progressive revenue proposals backed by the Illinois Revenue Alliance. These solutions would raise over $6 billion by finally making the ultra-wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share—through taxes on things like digital ads, capital gains, offshore profits, and billionaire wealth.

With that funding, Illinois could reject harmful local program cuts, fully fund critical services like violence prevention and parent mentorship, and fight back against the worst impacts of the Trump/Musk agenda.

👉  Use this form to tell your state legislators to support these proposals: tax billionaires, not working families.

Partner Action: Protect Worker Safety by Reversing NIOSH Cuts

Since 1970, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has done what its name promises—keep workers safe. From factory workers to firefighters, nurses to miners, NIOSH has provided vital research, safety recommendations, protective equipment certification, and even direct cancer screenings.

But in early April, RFK Jr.’s HHS gutted the agency—slashing two-thirds of the staff and shutting down labs nationwide. That’s 50 years of lifesaving infrastructure, gone.

This move doesn’t just threaten worker safety—it puts millions of lives at risk, undermines American labor protections, and benefits only the wealthy and powerful who profit from unsafe conditions.

And here’s the kicker: NIOSH actually saves businesses hundreds of millions of dollars a year in avoided costs by keeping workers healthy. We can’t let this stand. Our health, our safety, and our dignity on the job are not negotiable.

👉 Call your members of Congress today and tell them to restore NIOSH to protect workers:

  • Find your representative

  • Contact Senator Durbin at 312-353-4952 or at other numbers listed here

  • Contact Senator Duckworth at 312-886-3506 or at other numbers listed here

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to demand that [REP/SEN NAME] oppose Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s near-elimination of NIOSH. NIOSH's work protects American workers from deaths, injuries, and illnesses. [REP/SEN NAME] must stand up for the safety and wellness of our essential workers, including miners, firefighters, industrial workers, and healthcare workers.

Partner Action: ACLU People Power Action Call

In just the first 100 days, Trump has launched a wave of attacks on our freedoms, including civil rights rollbacks, deep cuts to Medicaid and healthcare, and escalating attacks on LGBTQ+ communities, immigrants, and protesters. But we haven’t been sitting still—we’ve been in the courts, in the states, and in the streets.

Join the ACLU for a People Power Action Call this Thursday, April 17 at 8 PM ET to get grounded in where things stand—and how we continue to fight back.

Highlight how impacted communities are leading the charge, celebrate wins like the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, and share ways to plug in for the fights ahead.
👉 RSVP to attend the virtual event tomorrow, April 17, at 7:00pm.
