Friday, May 16 - Join a Rally This Weekend! / Stop the Defunding of Our Public Schools / Indivisible Edgewater Chapter Launch 5/20

ICA & Partner Action: Join a Rally This Weekend!

Betty Alzamora of Indivisible Chicago has a clear message: we have to stay in the streets. We have to maintain a sustained presence, displaying publicly that we will not allow Trump, MAGA, Musk and his billionaire crew to steal from the poor to give to the rich.

Through protest we can make sure that the horrific reality of a Trump presidency is always in the face of everyday folks. This can help move public perception and lead to sweeping change at the midterms.

👉 We hope to see you at an upcoming rally this weekend!

  • Hands Across Chicagoland - Sunday, May 18 from 12:00-2:00pm, we'll form a human chain across 30 miles of Chicagoland in peaceful protest with dozens of Chicago-area partners. Check out the website for more info and to receive your assigned spot!

Partner Action: Stop the Defunding of Our Public Schools

Republicans are pushing a voucher scheme that threatens public education. On May 14, House Republicans advanced the Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA)—a $10 billion-per-year private school voucher bill—by attaching it to their partisan budget reconciliation package. The bill now heads to the full House for a vote.

The ECCA (S. 292 / H.R. 833) would divert public education funding into a 100% tax credit scheme benefiting the wealthy, allowing them to fully offset donations to private scholarship groups—turning public dollars into private school subsidies. The bill includes no accountability:

  • Funds can go to discriminatory private schools

  • There are no curriculum or outcome standards

  • It worsens disparities for low-income students and those with disabilities

  • Public schools—which serve 90% of U.S. children—would face larger class sizes, fewer programs, and possible closures

👉 Call your representatives: Tell them to vote NO on the ECCA and stop this tax dodge and voucher scam.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a [parent/teacher/public school supporter] from [CITY/STATE]. I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to oppose language from the Educational Choice for Children Act in the budget reconciliation bill. This provision is a scam that gives wealthy people tax shelters and sends billions of public dollars to private schools — while our public schools are already underfunded.
