Community Action: Know Your Voting Rights Training TONIGHT

When politicians try to rig election rules to cling to power, intimidate voters, or override the will of the people, they are attacking the cornerstone of our democracy. We will defend it.

Voting is how we protect our freedom and hold our leaders accountable. And as attacks on voting rights increase, defending that right is more necessary than ever.

👉 Join ACLU Foundation for a virtual Know Your Voting Rights training TODAY, Tuesday, August 18th at 7 PM CT with our friends from Voto Latino and Hispanic Federation. This training will focus on how our community can exercise the right to vote, including how to resist voter intimidation efforts and access assistance at the polls.

ICA Action: Tell Senator Dick Durbin - “Drop the False PROMISE Act!”

Senator Durbin is co-sponsor of a bipartisan bill  ( “Promise Act”S4979) that would speed up legislation to supposedly address the looming insolvency of the Social Security Trust Funds. Taking action now to shore up Social Security funding makes sense, but this bill calls for the unelected Social Security Advisory Board to develop legislation and could then force a vote during the lame duck session this year. It opens a back door to major changes that could cut benefits, raise the retirement age, reduce the cost-of-living provisions or privatize the system.

Instead, Senator Durbin should support already proposed bills that provide a fair and practical solution by raising the cap on Social Security taxes. (Currently, people don’t pay Social Security taxes on any income they make over the “cap,” of $184,000. As a result,  someone making $2 million pays the same in Social Security payroll taxes as someone making $184,000.)

👉 Call Senator Durbin: (202) 224-2154 or (312) 353-4952, or email him to urge him to withdraw his support for the PROMISE Act!

Indivisible Action: Election Protection 101 & 201

Calling all Indivisibles who are ready to demand Hands Off Our Vote! This August, Indivisible is holding two trainings on election protection: the actions you and those around you can take to ensure every eligible voter can vote, every vote is counted, and the results are honored and the winners seated. Join us in a 2-part training series for guidance on how to activate the vote, become a trusted messenger, prepare for election defense scenarios, and get in formation for fall activations.

These trainings will build on each other but will not cover exactly the same content. Come to both if you can, but it's okay if you can only attend one! Everyone who signs up will receive the recording and materials in the follow-up email.

👉Join Election Protection 101 on August 19 & 201 on August 26!
