Community Action: Ban AI Data Centers on Public Lands

The Trump administration is opening up federal public lands and military bases to private companies for AI data center development, bringing heavy water use, air and light pollution, and rising electricity costs to the surrounding communities and military families. Last year, Trump issued an executive order directing the U.S. military to identify sites to be used for AI infrastructure, prompting the Air Force and the Army to make deals with private companies building commercial data centers.

Earlier this year, a small town in Nevada became the first data center approved on BLM-managed public lands when the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) approved the building of a new data center without any input from the community. The 76-acre plot of land controlled by BLM was originally approved for a solar energy project, but they quietly swapped the plans, with residents only learning of the change after the fact.

All of this is consistent with the Trump administration’s broader pattern of treating public lands as assets to be sold off rather than preserved for public use. Rep. Rashida Tlaib has introduced a bill in the House, H.R. 9939 the No AI Data Centers on Federal Lands Act, that would permanently ban large AI data centers on all federal land, require the removal of existing facilities, and mandate site remediation.

👉 Congress must support this bill and other legislation to ensure that public lands remain in the hands of the public, not private developers.

Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Chicago. I'm calling to urge [NAME] to support H.R. 9939, the No AI Data Centers on Federal Lands Act. Congress must take action now to stop the Trump administration from handing over federal land to private developers for data centers. These lands belong to the people, not Big Tech and corporations.

👉 Plus, postcard parties in Lincoln Square at Wild Goose. Sign up here!

Postcard pick up!
The postcards are to Michigan voters urging them to vote in the Nov 3rd general election. Wins in Michigan are crucial to fight against MAGA. Several federal and state seats will be decided:

  • An open seat race for U.S. Senate rated a toss-up that we must retain if we’re going to flip the Senate

  • Open seat races for the three statewide offices - Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General - that will oversee Michigan’s election results in 2028

  • Races that will determine control of Michigan’s state legislature

Should you want to hold a postcard party with your chapter, friends or family, or want to write postcards on your own, please contact Pat Graham at pat@indivisiblechicago.com and she will help you with the details. ICA provides the postcards, address list and script. Writers provide the stamps for their written postcards and mail on Oct 14th.

👉 Let Pat know if you would like to pick up in Lakeview or Lincoln Square. Contact pat@indivisiblechicago.com for location details along with the number of postcards you want!
