Tuesday, September 16 - Protect US Passport Holders from Political Retribution / Rally to Thank Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor / ALMAS Immigration Update Webinar
Partner Action: Protect US Passport Holders from Political Retribution
Rep. Bill Mast (R-FL), chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has slipped a dangerous provision into H.R. 5300, the State Department reauthorization bill. Section 226 would allow the Secretary of State to revoke passports from U.S. citizens based on vague designations of “support” for terrorism — without due process or a criminal conviction.
This unchecked power threatens free speech and opens the door to political retribution. We’ve already seen the State Department target immigrants like Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, detaining or deporting them simply for voicing support for Palestine. If passed, Section 226 could expand these abuses to U.S. citizens, silencing dissent and criminalizing political beliefs.
👉 Call your House Representative today and demand they oppose Section 226 of H.R. 5300. Congress must strip this unconstitutional attack on free speech before the bill moves forward.
Script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from Chicago. I’m calling to demand that [REP NAME] oppose Section 226 of H.R. 5300, the State Department reauthorization bill. The Secretary of State should not have unchecked power to revoke passports from U.S. citizens for their beliefs or speech. This provision will pave the way for widespread political retribution and must be removed. Thank you for your time and consideration.
