Partner Action: Oppose Trump Advisor Stephen Miran for Fed Reserve Board
On August 7th, Trump nominated Stephen Miran, chair of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors, to join the Federal Reserve Board. Miran plans to keep his White House role while serving on the Fed, raising concerns about compromising its independence and swaying policy decisions for Trump’s benefit.
Trump has pressured Fed Chair Jerome Powell not to lower interest rates and attempted to fire governor Lisa Cook—whose firing was temporarily blocked by a judge. Miran has also criticized the Fed’s pandemic stimulus measures and questioned its independence.
The Fed is set to meet September 16-17 to decide interest rate changes. The Senate rushed Miran’s nomination for a vote before then.
