Action 1: Watch Free Renty in Honor of Juneteenth

Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States. Two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed.

In honor of Juneteenth, Community Renewal Society is offering free virtual access to the film Free Renty between June 16 and 22.

Free Renty, a film produced by Together Films, tells the story of Tamara Lanier, an African American woman determined to force Harvard University to release possession of daguerreotypes of her great-great-great grandfather, an enslaved man named Renty.

The daguerreotypes were commissioned in 1850 by a Harvard biologist to provide evidence in support of his poisonous theory of the superiority of the white race. The images remain emblematic of America's failure to acknowledge the cruelty of slavery, the racist science that supported it, and the white supremacy that continues to infect our society today.
