Wednesday, May 29 - Pass the PRESS Act / Wisconsin Canvassing in Kenosha
Actions You Can Take
Action 1: Email Senate Judiciary Committee Senior Counsel Kadeem Cooper to schedule a markup on the PRESS Act
Action 2: Wisconsin Canvassing in Kenosha on Saturday, June 8
Action 1: Pass the PRESS Act
Freedom of the Press is enshrined in our Constitution, but journalists are nonetheless subject to government surveillance and harassment. For two decades, there has been a bi-partisan effort to pass a strong national press shield law. Almost all states have them but we need a stronger, uniform law.
The good news is that the prospects for one passing are better than ever. The PRESS Act (S 2074 / HR 4250) passed the House without opposition.
Senator Durbin, committee chair, is a co-sponsor of the bill so this is not a difficult ask. The PRESS Act has broad support and should pass easily, if it is given sufficient priority, but it failed to receive a Senate vote in 2022.
The next step is for the Senate Judiciary Committee to schedule a markup. So, please email Senate Judiciary Committee Senior Counsel Kadeem Cooper to request that the committee schedule a markup on June 3 or June 10 The matter is time-critical.

We'll make the short drive from Chicago to where we’re headed in Kenosha. We’ll have a pre-canvass briefing once we get there, then split off into pairs to knock doors and find the voters that are going to help us deliver a win in November.
We'll provide all the info and prep you'll need and will have carpools for anyone needing a ride. Sign up today and we'll be back in touch soon with details.
After our canvass, those who can will meet over lunch to do a debrief.
While some of these Daily Actions come from our own work as Indivisible Chicago Alliance, others are from our many partners working to advance the progressive agenda. We invite you to join us in supporting their work. Postings from partners do not imply Indivisible Chicago Alliance endorsement of specific policies and positions.
