Partner Action: Block the Return of Predatory Bank Fees

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recently capped bank overdraft fees at $5, saving Americans an estimated $5 billion annually. However, a GOP-sponsored resolution (H.J. Res. 59/S.J. Res. 18) seeks to undo this critical rule, allowing banks to charge whatever they want.

This cap is a threat to big banks, backed by the Consumer Bankers Association. Congressman French Hill and Senator Tim Scott, who introduced the resolution, have received substantial donations from the banking industry—over $5 million combined.

Since its inception, the CFPB has recovered $21 billion for consumers. We must protect this progress! The House is expected to vote on the Senate-passed resolution THIS WEEK!

👉 Find your representative and demand they vote NO on any resolution that prioritizes the interests of big banks over American families.

Script: I’m calling to demand that [Rep. Name] oppose the Senate-passed S.J. Res. 18 which would overturn the CFPB rule limiting overdraft fees to five dollars. This rule saves consumers five billion annually and protects consumers from unreasonable and unpredictable banking fees.

Partner Action: Voting and the Environment Event

Tomorrow, the Illinois Environmental Council and Chicago Votes will be co-hosting a webinar to discuss the RACE Act (SB 1733), legislation that would restore voting rights for incarcerated individuals. During this webinar, you will learn about ways to get involved and hear from the advocates that have been at the forefront of this important movement.

While Illinois has some of the strongest voter registration laws in the country, archaic laws passed during the Jim Crow era disenfranchise people in prisons, which disproportionately restricts voting access in BIPOC communities. Consequently, these communities are prevented from holding power by electing leaders that represent them.

Expanding democracy in Illinois is not only good for people, but our environment as well. We have seen that when marginalized communities are empowered, environmental protections become more possible.

👉 Join the call to discuss the RACE Act TOMORROW, Thursday, April 10 at 6 p.m.
