Tuesday, December 6 - School Tax Credit Voucher Forum TODAY / Public Comment Against the New Chicago Gang Database

Actions You Can Take Today

Action 1: TODAY - School Tax Credit Voucher Forum

Join us to learn how the Illinois “Invest in Kids” voucher program funnels public tax money into private schools. Who wins with tax credit vouchers? And who loses? What can we do to put an end to the tax credit? To learn more, read this FAQ.

The so-called "Invest in Kids" tax credit voucher program is slated to end in 2023, but we expect a push to make it permanent in the next Illinois General Assembly session. For that reason, our forum on Dec. 6th will be a timely effort to activate our campaign against an extension. Cassie Creswell, Director of Illinois Families for Public Schools, will provide a powerful and informative presentation on the topic, and we hope to raise awareness and garner more participation in our campaign to end this destructive policy.

Join the virtual forum TODAY, Tuesday, Dec 6 at 7:00 pm.

Action 2: DEADLINE TOMORROW - Get Rid of the Gang Database

The Chicago Police Department has published yet another draft of its new ‘Criminal Enterprise Information System’ otherwise known as the Chicago Gang Database, for public comment. Community members have until Wednesday, December 7 to make public comments rejecting this and any other gang database.

  • 90 gang arrest cards (GAC) have dates prior to 1901, making those individuals 117 years old. 80 GACs are listed as having ages of 0.

  • 95% of those in the Gang Database are Black and brown, with little-to-no substantial proof showing that people categorized as gang-members are in fact gang-affiliated.

Simply put, the data is bad and it has a disparate impact on communities of color. Read more about the gang database.

Submit a public comment against the database before TOMORROW, Wednesday, December 7.
