Thursday, January 16 - Thank Those Protecting Our Welcoming City/Say No to Devastating Budget Cuts

Actions You Can Take

Action 1: Thank Those who Protected Our Welcoming City

Success! Chicago stays a Welcoming City after 39 Alders stopped a push to allow CPD to work with ICE. Chicago City Council voted 39-11 on Wednesday to table the ordinance that would have weakened protections for immigrants, just days before Trump, with his deportation threats, takes office.

  • First, a HUGE THANKS to YOU! All of you who showed up at City Hall to protest these proposed changes or called and emailed your alderperson made a difference!!!

  • Let’s thank the 39 alders who acted to keep Chicago a Sanctuary City!

  • What about the 11 alders on the other side of the vote? Here are the alders who voted to consider the measure: Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd Ward), Ald. Anthony Beale (9th Ward), Ald. Marty Quinn (13th Ward), Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th Ward), Ald. David Moore (17th Ward), Ald. Silvana Tabares (23rd Ward), Ald. Monique Scott (24th Ward), Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th Ward), Ald. Anthony Napolitano (41st Ward), Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd Ward) and Ald. Jim Gardiner (45th Ward.) If your alderperson was on the wrong side of this issue, let them know you’re disappointed.

  • Find your alderperson here.

  • Read more details on the vote in a WTTW article from Heather Cherone.

Action 2: Say No to Devastating GOP Budget Cuts

House Republicans have proposed a staggering $5 trillion in cuts that would devastate critical programs like Medicaid, education, and food assistance. These cuts will be used to fund massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and corporations, at the expense of millions of working families.

It’s no coincidence that House Republicans are seeking to cut more than $5 trillion from critical services when a renewal of their expiring 2017 tax scam would cost the exact same amount. But, with only a narrow Republican majority in Congress, we have a chance to shut down these cuts and the tax scam before they happen.

Click here to send a message to your representative to reject the $5 trillion in cuts.
